| Will the real terrorists please stand up? 9/11 - Do you remember? On September 11, 1973, the United States government helped overthrow the democratically elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende, and install a military dictatorship that lasted 17 years. Right-wing forces led by Augusto Pinochet killed several thousand people (approximately the same number as were killed in the terrorist attacks last year), including a couple of Americans, one of whose bodies was kept from his family until decomposed in order to hide evidence of torture. Victims of the Pinochet regime are currently fighting through international courts to hold the dictator and his accomplices--including Henry Kissinger--accountable for their crimes against the Chilean people. Given that the coup of 9/11/73 is only one of many, many acts of violence and oppression supported or actively perpetrated by the U.S. government, we are led to ask: will the real terrorists please stand up? |
